Oral Hi-Tech, Medical-Delivery Device May Help Diabetics/Drug Abusers In Future

A new oral device with a medicine delivery system called the IntelliDrug may hit the European market before the end of 2007 or possibly in 2008, if trial studies continue to be successful. It's a removable micro-sized dental device that controls the delivery of medication for a patient's needs, which can last for several months.

The IntelliDrug is also noninvasive and it does not interfere with normal functions. It is only the size of a tooth that can be placed in the oral cavity by the back molars. The future initial marketability is aimed at treating chronic disease sufferers (such as diabetics) and drug addicts.

The medicine can be directly absorbed into the bloodstream through this system. No more need for insulin needle injections for patients suffering from diabetes.

The intelligent system also has a remote control that will enable medicine to be adjusted and to inform the patient and doctor that the drug container needs refilling.

Current trial studies have been successfully conducted on pigs. The researchers hope to start testing the prototype on humans soon.

It is also hoped that the manufacturers will be able to make the device small enough that it can become a permanent fixture and last indefinitely.

Coordination for the research and development of this breakthrough technology stretches across several European countries and Israel, and it is being financially supported by the European Commission.
